In this episode we chatted with Alfie Wishart about addiction recovery, compassion, shame, and the role of spirituality in healing. He shares about his personal recovery journey and also discusses how he works with therapy clients. He explains codependency and how he helps people heal from narcissistic relationships. Listen in for his perspective on the connections between shame and addiction, and his thoughts on learning to distinguish between the ‘true self’ and ‘false self.
Alfie Wishart is a therapist in private practice in Dallas, Texas, a long-time meditator, a licensed professional counselor (LPC), licensed chemical dependency counselor (LCDC) and a certified rehabilitation counselor (CRC). He is a Trained Teacher in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, a Trained Teacher in Mindful Self-Compassion through the UC San Diego Medical School, and a member of the International Mindfulness Teachers Association.
He operates from the belief that as the world in which we live becomes evermore stressful, our ability to maintain a healthy equilibrium becomes all the more urgent. His practice is informed by the principles of Humanistic Psychology, Positive Psychology, MBSR, MBCT (Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy), and MSC (Mindful Self Compassion), to help individuals, couples, adolescents and adults, address and work through shame, narcissistic relationships, trauma, substance abuse, codependence, crises of faith, anger, anxiety, depression, and related mental health and relational issues.

Alex Gokce, MSW
Alex Gokce, MSW has a master’s degree in social work from Salem State University and an undergraduate degree in Comparative Government from Harvard University. He has led psychotherapy groups on topics including mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and mind-body approaches to pain management. He has co-led programs at the Boston Shambhala Center on the topics of trauma and self-compassion. His personal and professional interests center around the individual, societal and intergenerational impacts of trauma, as well as the sociocultural roots of interpersonal harm.
